Game preparation

The field has the shape of a cross. Char koni is a large field in the middle and both the start and the finish field. The fields marked with a cross protect a player. If you sit on it, you cannot be beaten.

In the beginning, each player receives four pawns of the same color. The players sitting opposite form a team. The dice are rolled with two dice.

The Goal of the Game

The goal is to circle the entire playing field with all the characters. For all figures, the middle of the field is the starting and ending point. Which team first manages to bring all the characters back to the center after circling the track has won.

Gameplay from Ludo

Whoever rolls the highest number of dice starts the game and places one of his figures in the center of the field. Then he rolls the die again and pulls the number of dice along with the arms pointing in his direction. When the figures reach the outer circle, they move on counterclockwise. When the same figure has returned to the starting arm, it pulls the same way back to the middle. The middle field must be reached with the exact number of eyes. Outside the field, all figures that have reached the goal are collected.

Roll the Dice

In the past cowries were used for dicing. Then the openings counted upwards. In the meantime, you play the game with dice. If a player has rolled a six, he can either place another figure in the middle of the field or move the six spaces with another of his figures in the field. Then it's his turn again. If you roll three sixes in a row you have to miss around. If a player no longer has a figure in the game, he may roll three times to get a six and then place a new figure again.

Beat

If a field is already occupied and you have the exact number for it, you can beat the opponent from the field. He then has to try again to bring his figure into play with a six. If it is a team partner who occupies the field, you do not hit him but sit down.

Protective Fields

Protective fields are the fields that are marked with a cross. Nobody is allowed to be beaten here and also not to be beaten. A protective field can only be occupied by one person at a time. If the protective field is already occupied, you place your figure behind the protective field on the free field.

Barrier / Blockages

The rule extension creates additional tension to form barriers. Traditionally this did not happen in India but in many western Pachisi descendants.


If there are two stones of the same color in the same field, they form a block together. The blockage is removed as soon as one of the players moves on. It is impossible to pass the blockades and they can also be formed together with the team partner.


Zugzwang
There is no compulsion to move in the traditional game. You can also sit out if you think you will be worse off later. With other variants, there is a constraint. The rules should be clearly communicated before the game.

Playing

When all eight of the team's figures have reached midfield, the team wins. The field must be reached with the exact number of eyes. If a team partner has already brought all of his game pieces to the goal, he can still roll for his partner when it is his turn.

If you only play Ludo in pairs, everyone automatically takes over the figures opposite him. That means everyone sends eight figures on the journey and brings them to the destination.
